Komodo Habitat Heat Mats are an excellent primary heat source for most applications requiring night time heating. They emit no visible light and are the most widely used heater for this purpose.

Komodo Habitat Heat Mats are excellent as the sole heat source for most species of snake and many invertebrates such as scorpions and tarantulas. If in doubt please seek expert advice regarding the animal’s specific requirements.

1. Most reptiles require a thermal gradient in their vivarium. Choose a heat mat that is between one half and two thirds of the size of the vivarium.

2. Choose where to position the heat mat. The heat mat can be positioned inside or outside of glass or plastic tanks. In wooden structures the heat mat must be fixed inside the cage.

3. Choose whether to use a floor or wall mounting. This will depend on the species being housed and other factors, such as the amount of substrate being used.

4. Ensure the heat mat is fixed securely by using good quality adhesive tape fixed onto the clear edges of the mat. Ensure that the mat cannot move and that the animals cannot get under or behind the mat, or get stuck to the adhesive.

5. Check that if the heat mat is installed on the floor it is not covered by more than 1cm of substrate. If the substrate is too thick over the mat the heat cannot escape. This may cause it to overheat, resulting in a risk of damage to the vivarium and harm to the occupants.

6. Plug the heat mat in and monitor and check everything is working correctly before introducing the animals. Consider the use of a thermostat when necessary.
